to hell with modesty.
It's been up a while, but Pat's Fantasy Hotlist (which despite its title is not porno) has an interview with me. Usual stuff.

So what bit of the Aubrey/Maturin series did you have in mind when you said the series contained the one piece of writing that made me go 'fuck me!' in amazement when I read it, then ?

Which was my immediate question, too.

(For me it's the description, in one short paragraph, of the pursuing Dutch ship going under in a storm in Desolation Island, I think)

I've just reread Desolation Island through The Surgeon's Mate about a week ago, and there's a lot of wonderful stuff in those.

If I had to pick one scene that completely blows me away every time, it's the pillory sequence in Reverse of the Medal, but so much of the significance of that rests on everything we've seen of Jack Aubrey before then, I'm not sure the impact of the scene can be conveyed without reading through the books to that point.

some con or other we must have a 'Patrick O'Brian dinner' --historical food, music, dreadful anecdotes, naval protocol and toasts, 'the bottle stands with you, air...'

[info]papersky and I attended a dinner in Portsmouth for the bicentenary of Jack and Stephen's first meeting, which was a lot of fun and certainly qualified on the anecdotage front, and took the guided tour of HMS Victory afterwards, which was absolutely fascinating. Absolutely amazing for efficient use of limited volume of space. And to think Stephen found a ship of the line roomy enough to exclaim about.

Well, I've got the companion cookbook and music CD (and the atlas, and the lexicon, I am a complete O'Brian fanboy). So I'd be up for that.

It is indeed the destruction of the Waakzaamheid. If ever they make another movie, hat chase and sinking sequence has to be in it. The pillory scene, mentioned below, is also tremendous and, strangely, makes you feel like cheering. I'll say no more.

You, too, eh? I was thinking of that scene last night while reading in bed, and I got goosebumps all over again.

The first time I read the pillory scene, I cried with a big grin on my face. Then I read it to my poor husband (I say poor because being thrown into the middle of a long series like that with no context to go by is a bit mean, especially if your wife is expecting you to be as wowed as she is).

I make a mean boiled Spotted Dick, btw... real suet :-)

Even the possibility of someday reading a third book set in the Chaga makes my day.

Good interview--except fantasy? You're definitely kicked off the Mundane roster.
