Approaching the Gulf of Bothnia
I should have flagged this up some time ago, but at the end of the month we're off the Aland Islands in the Gulf of Bothnia (a name I remember from years of playing Diplomacy) as GoH at Acon2 which looks a pile of fun in a very interesting place. That's my excuse for not being at the Clarkes. Any con that involves four different forms of transport to get there appeals to my inner Clarkson. Looking forward to it a lot: I must try and get another bottle of salmiakki, which is damn fine stuff.

Things seen: Stephan Martiniere's cover for Cyberabad Days (painting here.) It's evolved slightly since and it even hotter.

Things seen two: draft 2 of the script for River of Gods: The Movie.

And these guys at the top are My Noo Favourite Band.

I used to know all about iron-ore mining and the Gulf of Bothnia, when I was 16. Mercifully for all, I have forgotten it.

was it Kiruna, the magnetic mountain made of iron ore, perchance?

Very nice illustration and excellent news.

And congrats on your nominations and awards for Brasyl. A good year and good company on the ballots. :-)

Well, salmiakki is Finnish. In general don't use Finnish words carelessly with locals on Åland, they tend to be protective about their linguistic identity. ,-)

I noticed the total absence of any language but English on the Åcon2 site (Finnish personal names and Swedish place names aside) - the furthest reaches of the Finnish Empire :).

Yeah. I was a bit puzzled about that too, the Finnish personal names. Most Ålanders I have known had _very_ Swedish personal names.

Well, none of us organizing the convention actually is from Åland -- one from Sweden, the rest from mainland Finland. Maybe that explains it. :-)

And since the whole convention is in English, the site is in English too.

Fair enough. I just assumed that with the name and location there would be some sort of local connection with some of the organizers.

Nope, it was just a place we wanted to visit, so we decided to have a convention there. And since we didn't know fans there to organize one for us, we had to do it ourselves.

I guess the standardized tax-free cruises to Åland as kind of a rite of passage are mostly a thing of Stockholm culture.

Oh, it's the same in Finland too. But with the cruise, you just go there, turn around and come back (with the tax-free bought on the ferry) -- you don't actually go to Mariehamn at all. So it's a place everyone has seen when cruising by but few have actually been to.

That cover is luscious - I want to smother it in onions and red wine sauce and...and....

Er, yes. Martiniere is an artiste, no doubt about it. That pic he did for River waay back is still evocative to the max. As for RofG Da Movee - ya lucky dog, ye! I`m gonna have to think seriously about cramming Shadowkings into a filmable plot...could be done, I think...
