And so, on Sunset Boulevard. That was exactly 24 hours bed-to-bed, which is a bit rough, but for the price, you couldn't be rude to it. Continental Belfast to Newark,Newark-LAX. For once the hotel transfer didn't send me into Victor Meldrew-esque tantrums of frustration, but then it wasn't TBIT. Hotel is posh and rather nice, though the service is a little fawning, which I haste, but then that's a this-side-of-the-Atlantic thing. Haven't seen a damn thing, having slept soundly and toyed with the Mr Coffee (which, with a thrilling disregard for health and safety, is in the bathroom. I've got a meeting with G4 television at 11 on a couple of animation projects, then the rest of the day is science fictional.

Oh, and can any pundits tell me why this Asus EEE (and it happened on a previous HP laptop), when you type, frequently jumps the cursor back to the previous instance of a vowel further up the document, so you can mistype scads of material before you notice? It is very very frustrating.

Check where your mouse pointer-thing is. I get the same thing occasionally, and it's because I've brushed the trackpad in such a way as to make the text cursor move back up the page.

Bloody irritating, isn't it?

That happens to me on my Dell Mini 12.

too bloody right it is! You may well be right about accidentally brushing the touchpad. If there were some way of turning down the sensitivity, that would be a start.

I was going to have a poke at this, but forgot. I'll stick it on my To Do list and report back.

I think every single time I've been in a hotel room, if there's a coffee machine it's been in the bathroom. They're never there in UK bathrooms? I find this an oddly wonderful bit of culture difference.

Ah, how I miss LA's sunshine.

Three years in the puritan snowy hell of the northeastern US has, perhaps, led me to idealize LA's climate a bit. *grin*

Check the up arrow key location. I can't use Eee's -- I tried -- because the right shift key is normal key sized and is just to the right of the up arrow. I kept hitting up instead of right-shift, which is a royal pain in the ass.

(In contrast, the new HP mini 1000, aka Compaq mini 700 in the UK, has A GOOD KEYBOARD ON A NETBOOK, shock horror! You might want to look at one in the local shops before you head home.)

The up-arrow is what always gets me on my ASUS, FWIW. I've considered just remapping the keyboard, but for the moment I'm still (lazily?) stubbornly trying to train myself to use it as is.

I get the same thing on any Thinkpad keyboard; I think it's trackpad and another advantage of the HP 1000 and 2140 is that you can *turn the trackpad off when typing* to avoid the problem.

On Your Asus Eee PC you can simply Hit: Fn and F3, which freezes the TOUCH pad...but, you must remember to UNFREEZE it too when you want it back. As for the HP's? Simply PRESS the tiny lit (when activated) push button at the center of the pad area, and above (if you're getting this image I'm writing...) and it will shut off your touch pad. If you have either of these machines...you'll know what I mean. Just got the Eee PC tonight and before getting it I asked a young man named Daniel who at age 8 built his own computer...all home schooled...what a wiz...got a new solid state/drive ASUS Eee PC 1000 HEB. So far so good.
